单词silhouette来自18世纪法国财务大臣Etienne de Silhouette的名字。在他担任财务大臣时，法国因为“七年战争”而陷入财务危机。他上任后厉行节俭政策，禁止铺张奢华，因此遭到很多贵族的憎恶。

于是，Silhouette上任一年就被罢免。当时巴黎流行简易的剪影，而Silhouette试图以最简单的方式改变法国财政状况，因此人们把他的名字跟这种廉价的艺术品联系起来，用以奚落剪影成不了巨画，也嘲讽Silhouette短暂的政治生涯。后来，这个恶搞的说法居然流传了下来，silhouette成为了“剪影、轮廓”的代名词。
